Overgrazing is one of the main causes of landscape degradation in Socotra. This bachelor is focused on research on local herders and their perceptions of landscape degradation on the island. Also, the willingness of herders to participate in environmental protection is examined. The research was conducted through a questionnaire survey during the period 9.10. –9.11.2021. The results show that the pressure on tree vegetation has increased due to changes in traditional farming practices. The research also confirmed that herders are aware of landscape degradation, even perceiving a link between land degradation and overgrazing. Herders are aware of the negative impacts on their livelihoods as a result of landscape degradation but are unaware of the future consequences and threats to the existence of forests. Many of them are willing to voluntarily contribute to environmental protection. Herders are open to development cooperation, participation in landscape management or education through seminars. They are also willing to reduce grazing in the forest or reduce the number of their livestock in order to protect the forest, but many of them only with certain compensations. Local people depend on their livestock as they are the main source of livelihood for the local population and other forms of management are very limited due to climatic conditions. The research conducted helped to understand how herders perceive landscape degradation and to what extent they are willing to cooperate in nature conservation.

My thesis focuses on current environmental attitudes of secondary medical schools´ students. Its aim is to explore these attitudes through questionnaire surveys. The thesis is divided into a theoretical part and a practical one, the former describing environmental education in all the three sections of the school system (including preschool education), and the latter analysing secondary students´ questionnaires. The thesis covers specifics and problems that the environmental education faces within the Czech traditional school system, and it also maps items such as environmental management, legislation, impacts and aspects. Last but not least, the theoretical part investigates the environment, its pollution, its protection and its fundamental problems. Finally, the theoretical part describes environmental attitudes and the behaviour interconnected with them. The practical part deals with the survey itself, using the research method of an online questionnaire, divided into five sections, which as a whole answers the key reasearch question. The practical part is complemented by tips and recommendations for teachers.

Hlaváčková, Anna ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
The Master's thesis "Food Waste in the United States as an Issue of Federal Public Policy Making" analyzes the role of the federal government in dealing with food waste. It mainly focuses on federal legislation, but it also examines actions on the state level to illustrate the contrast between the two. In the thesis, the author examines the causes and sources of food waste, federal jurisdiction for intervention, and the history of passed legislation, as well as proposed legislation, and solutions. The main goal of the thesis is to demonstrate that federal involvement is fundamental in achieving any significant change, but so far has failed to do so. Primary literature consisting largely of bills, materials published by federal agencies, and reports by non-profit organizations were used to uncover the character of passed legislation. Academic secondary literature in the form of articles, reports, and factsheets offered context to understand the scope and impacts of the legislation. Analysis of those sources revealed federal authority to deal with the issue, as well as possible obstacles standing in the way of an extensive federal intervention. Research also showed that in the absence of federal action, some states have stepped up to introduce legislation to reduce food waste, but this legislation is...
The Environmental Issues in the Czech Daily Press: News Coverage of Water Issues
Hanušová, Anna ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis investigates the evolution of news coverage of water-related issues in the Czech daily press from 2014 to 2019. Its theoretical part describes the relationship between mass media and the environment. The characteristics of environmental news are explained more in detail and in the context of environmental topics' features, journalistic routines, news normative demands and economic pressure in the media industry. The topic of the thesis is linked to the media theories about news values, gatekeeping, agenda-setting and framing as well. There is also a review of the studies examining news coverage of the environment and a brief description of the water management situation in the Czech Republic. The methodical part introduces the research goal and previous studies which were used as a base for the method in this paper. The results of the content analysis enabled to describe the news about water issues quantitatively and to explain its features and development according to the theoretical framework and previous findings. This thesis concluded that Czech dailies do not treat the topic of water issues as very important, they are event-oriented, dependent on the official sources and focused on risk-related topics. This can limit public awareness of the problem with decreasing water...

Niklas Luhmann and the ecological discussion: a sociological approach to environmental problems
Stehlík, Martin ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Holeček, Tomáš (referee)
1 Abstract The bachelor thesis deals with sociological approach to environmental problems in Niklas Luhmann's systems theory and proceeds mainly from Luhmann's book Ecological communication. The first charpter contains a brief summary of various forms of relation between sociology and environmental problems. The main part of the thesis is dedicated to a presentation of Luhmann's general sociological theory and its application to contemporary environmental problems. From Luhmann's viewpoint, it is an issue of the relation between the system of society and its environment. According to Luhmann, the possibilities of a social reaction to environmental problems are limited in two ways: because of the selectivity of social relations to environment and because of functional differentiation, i.e., the creation of operationally closed function systems within the system of society. Subsequently, I complete the explanation of Luhmann's position with the selected comments and critiques of Ecological communication. I also present Ulrich Beck`s theory of risk society and point out its connection to Luhmann's approach, particularly in the case of functional differentiation of modern society.
